Who Needs This Permit
Carriers that regularly operate qualified vehicles across IRP member jurisdictions—including South Dakota—should hold IRP apportioned plates and a cab card rather than buying temporary trip permits for every entry into SD.
New interstate fleets, carriers expanding routes into South Dakota, and operators whose current base jurisdiction filings omit SD are strong candidates for IRP setup or amendment assistance.

Permit Details
The IRP is a reciprocity agreement among U.S. states (and Canadian provinces) that apportions registration fees based on miles traveled in each member jurisdiction. Once South Dakota appears on your cab card, you generally do not need SD temporary trip permits for covered vehicles.
